Year 6 2018 - 2019

Mrs Dickens

Welcome back to the Summer Term!

 Year 6

Welcome back to our Year 6 children. We have an exciting and busy term ahead! The children are already working hard, in this, their final term at Nantwich Primary Academy.

This Term's Topic

Our topic this term is Stars and Stripes. We will be learning all about North America, considering its differing landscapes, geography and climate. We will also be thinking about how this contrasts with the area in which we live.

Our Class Book

In English, we will be continuing to read Rooftoppers. The story is getting very exciting and we can hardly wait to get going again.

Will Sophie find her mother?

What will happen to Matteo?

We can't wait to find out.........

Rooftoppers - Synopsis

A baby girl is found floating in a cello case in the middle of the Atlantic. Fellow passenger, Charles Maxim, rescues the child from the shipwreck, giving her a name and a home. Though she was just one year old at the time, Sophie insists she saw her mother in the water, waving for help. That single image is enough to convince Sophie that her mother is alive and waiting to be discovered. ROOFTOPPERS begins like a fairy tale. An irresistible feeling of timelessness and possibility pervades Katherine Rundell’s marvellous novel.

Key Information

Physical Education

PE will be on Thurdays each week. It is essential that the children have their PE kits in school each week. We will also be undertaking the Golden Mile and preparing for our fantastic sports day.

Times-Table Rockstars

Your child has an account on Times-Table Rockstars and should be practising on increasing their rock speed, though they may train in the garage area of the site to earn virtual coins and gain confidence (these coins are only used to change the appearance of their rock star's avatar, and have no actual monetary value.) Here is the direct link to the website:

Improving Reading Comprehension Online

Your child also has an account on, an excellent website designed to test your child on a variety of reading extracts and quizzes based on these, which then tracks your child's progress and makes decisions on whether to increase or decrease the difficulty of the texts based on their answering of the comprehension exercises.

Reading Diaries

All reading diaries need to be in daily and children should be reading at home at least three times a week. As an added incentive, we will be giving raffle tickets to those children who read at home and there will be a class prize each week. Add this to our Reading Rewards system and who wouldn't want to bury their nose in a good book!

Other useful information:

Contacting me: You are very welcome to contact me through Class Dojo, through the School Office or by catching me at the end of the school day.  I am always happy to talk to parents /guardians, so feel free to drop by.

Water bottles: In the Summer Term, chicldren should bring their water bottle in to school, to help them stay hydrated during the day. If your child needs a school water bottle these can be purchased from the School Office for £1.  Water bottles should be washed out at the end of the day, and Year 6 children are more than capable of monitoring this for themselves.

Sun-cream / Hats: Keep your eyes on the weather forecast if your child is susceptible to the intense sun during the summer term. Information about this may also appear on the school newsletter or via School Story on Class Dojo.

Snacks / Bacon rolls: Snacks are available at break every day, and bacon rolls for £1 on Fridays. You may pay for your child's bacon roll via the online payment system.

Homework: Weekly homework includes time to test yourself on TT Rockstars and ReadTheory, but your child also receives a spelling list and a half-termly Dojo Homework Project Challenge list. This summer term, we have reduced the amount of tasks per column to two. However, we will be awarding extra dojo points for each of the categories (1 dojo, 3 dojos, 5 dojos) if the item in question shows particular merit or effort with presentation. We will check through the homework books regularly, and talk with the pupils about the standards within them, giving dojo points where merited. Please remind them of the importance of not misplacing or mistreating their homework books.
